Spiritual Flo

Whether you’re a full on alternative-medicine groupie or just beginning to experiment with holistic therapies, you have to admit that the right song can do a lot to change your mental state. Alternative healers have long been using sound therapy to facilitate deep mental shifts that reduce the need for pharmaceuticals, and some doctors attest that music can indeed be as powerful as a drug. Studies have shown that certain types of music can improve concentration, open your mind, increase your creativity, and even help bring you into a trance state. It has been shown that the healing power of music can be used to help treat schizophrenia, depression, anxiety and chronic pain, either by producing biological changes like reduced blood pressure, or by creating openings for increased empathy, freer creative expression, and deeper connections with other people. Pretty impressive, right? This week’s Flo includes a few contemporary musicians who are exploring this new world of possibilities – and it sounds great.
